I THOUGHT this image looked familiar ... and double checked it wasn't a copy - sorry for my suspicious nature ;-)

I'm sure if Andreas were alive, he'd be thrilled with your very very good homage - the lighting/fall of shadow is almost identical, just a modern version of :-)))
Welcome to ViewBug, your homage is added to my faves :-)) Ell

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at my living room in my old house in Sydney

Time

It was well past midnight. I was doing an assignment for the photo diploma in which we were to shoot "In the style of..." The idea was to recreate iconic photos or paintings by studying the light and equipment used by the greats. While it isn't always possible to know exactly what equipment was used, after a while studying images you can start making informed assumptions based on the resulting image.

Lighting

I didn't have any focusable light or any modifiers on had so I had to improvise. The background was lit with a metz speedlight set to multimode. It triggered the main light which was an old Jinbei Portable light. I put a piece of cardboard with an oval cutout and in front of it I put a magnifying glass to be able to focus it.

Equipment

Believe or not, the photo was taken with that very Canon G9 that I am holding it had a range finder in its hot shoe. It was mostly to get the image as close as possible to Feininger's one. It is a self portrait so I shot myself in the mirror and then flipped the resulting image. The camera was loaded with the Canon Hack Development Kit (CHDK) and I was using the light trigger in it to release the shutter. The background was lit with an old Metz Mecablitz with interchangeable shoe speedlight. I Think the model was 48Mz 4. It was set to multi flash mode so it was in effect the shutter release as the camera shutter will actuate when it sensed the release of light. It also released the main light which was an old Jinbei portable floor pack set in cell mode. The light was slightly off centre to be able to accommodate the mirror. After I went through all this trouble I realised that I could have used the 5d Mk2 to take the photo and just pose in front with the g9. But well it was well past midnight and I couldn't think straight anymore.

Inspiration

It was for that assignment mentioned above. The original is one of my favourite photos ever and I would be falsely modest if I didn't say myself that my version is great.

Editing

I cropped, flipped the image, convert it to Black and White and increase the contrast a bit.

In my camera bag

From back then to today it has changed. I used to shoot with Canon DSLR now I use Sony Mirrorless. My bag is an ever changing animal as no two jobs are the same so bodies, lenses and accessories are in a constant rotation. Even my bags change these days.

Feedback

I think I described it pretty well above. The most important thing here is the focusable light. It would even be possible to be done with continuous light.
