Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the east jetty along the Colorado River near Matagorda TX. I usually carry my camera with me as you never know what one my stumble upon.

Time

It was taken midday Sept 22, 2013

Lighting

The sun was directly overhead at the time of the photograph

Equipment

It was shot with my cannon 70D using a 18-135 mm lens, free-hand. I had to drop my fishing rod, run to the truck to gab my camera and hope for the best.

Inspiration

I was having a slow day fishing when up flew this Great Blue with a fish he had just caught right in front of me. He obviously was having better luck and all I could think was "what a great shot if I can just capture it. Really how often does one get this close to a wild bird with such a large fish?

Editing

The only post processing that I did was to crop the rocks of the jetty that were in the foreground and the water of the river in the background.

In my camera bag

I carry my cannon 70D and four lenses with me, a cannon 18-135 mm, cannon 18-200 mm, cannon 55-250 mm and a cannon ET-83C which is a 100-400 mm. The 100-400 is my favorite for birds but I never take it out on the water. My 55-250 lens is the one that goes out on my boat.

Feedback

Be prepared for the unexpected. Planning and knowing your location is good but my better photographs have been taken at the spur of moment while traveling. Composition is paramount, pay attention to the background as well. I have taken some wonderful photographs only to find the litter near by the image is distracting.
