Behind The Lens

Location

This was a crazy weekend in Yosemite National Park. It was a completely impromptu trip in late April and we hit snow on our way into the park. I was so pumped as I knew this would get us some great scenery the next morning with a light fresh snow.

Time

I got up at 4am to head up to Tunnel View and captured this image on the way back into the valley. I didn't even know this spot existed and the only reason we stopped was because of the warm sunrise light.

Lighting

I arrived just in time to get the light hitting the mountains, but having the foreground still in the shadows. I took quite a few photographs, but, thankfully, was able to capture the wisp coming off the mountain lit up by the morning light.

Equipment

Location: Yosemite National Park Canon 5D Mark III 16-35mm f/2.8 at 30mm 3.2s ISO 100 Lee Filters Polarizer and .9 Hard GND Benro Tripod

Inspiration

I was going into the valley Friday night and saw the snow coming down. Getting extremely excited, I made the commitment to get up at 4am as I just knew that Tunnel View would look fantastic that morning. As I was driving back into the valley, the light was just amazing. It was hitting all the peaks and causing the snow to melt and evaporate creating some wonderful scenes. I saw the river from the road and thought that it would be a great leading line into the three brothers. I took a longer exposure to make sure that I got the clearest image I could reflected in the water below.

Editing

All post processing was done in Lightroom. I actually created a video of the process I did to create the final image here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7_-VQtNwL8.

In my camera bag

While my equipment has changed dramatically since I took this shot (I now shoot Nikon instead of Canon), I still carry a wide angle lens (Which does have a bit of distortion and vignetting) as well as a remote shutter cable and tripod. I also carry filters to do as much in camera as possible.

Track the weather, make the commitment, and be spontaneous! In my experience, it’s the spontaneous adventure that encourages creativity and often produces the best photographic opportunities.
