At 282 feet below sea level, Death Valley's Badwater Basin is a salty, barren, weird sort of visual hysteria that shouldn't exist but does anyway. The geology of the Mojave in this area is terrifying and unique, and it makes for a very surreal visit - if you're willing to brave the heat in small doses. As read in a book in the Furnace Creek gift shop: "It's more convenient than hell."
