Behind The Lens

Location

I think this photo in a field alongside The Colorado river in Austin, Texas! It was a bit of a surprise to see how colorful our golden hour became!

Time

This is easily one of my favorite portraits i’ve ever taken! It was a little shy of 10 minutes before the sun dropped below the horizon! It was so warm and peaceful out!

Lighting

I’m always sure to keep my subject backlit during golden hour. Anytime the sun is directly in front of or above my subject, it will cast uncomfortable and distracting shadows upon their face or will simply be too bright to keep their eyes open. Thankfully, the colors the sky gave me to work with gave me a beautiful summer tone across the wheat field I was shooting in!

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony A7riii with a G-Master 24-70mm 2.8 Lens and a Polarpro 6-9 Stop ND filter. No other equipment was needed!

Inspiration

More often than not i’m always looking for ways to make something out of nothing. If I don’t have a preplanned idea to shoot a particular setting, I improvise. I was looking for an environment that matched the weather and colors we were in, which was very warm. I was inspired to stop this moment in time to capture my friend in a vulnerable setting of nature, One with the seasons. As if they were changing before our eyes!

Editing

I spent roughly 45-60 minutes editing this particular photo in post production. I felt no need to include any sky replacements and include any additional touch ups in photoshop, I felt that would distract my viewer away from the story too much. I wanted to keep things as real as possible, only color enhancements!

In my camera bag

As stated, my weapon on choice for camera bodies is Sony no matter the circumstances. My A7riii is an absolute monster and has helped me capture all of my favorite images on my realms around the world. I primarily only bring along G-Master and Sigma glass as i’ve found theyre some of the most impressive. I keep a GM 12-24mm f4 for all of my super wide shots, a GM 24-70mm f2.8 as my primary go-to lens to have the most amount of flexibility, and a Sigma 35mm f1.4 as my portrait favorite. As I limit the range of focal lengths I choose to carry, this challenges me to make it happen with this variety of depth, no matter the shot i’m looking to achieve. If it means I need to move forward or back up a few hundred feet, so be it. I’m always looking for a challenge.

Feedback

Take advantage of the things nature already has to offer you a pure shot. Don’t focus too hard on gear or finding things to make your shots better in photoshop. How you use the gear you have and your surroundings is everything. During sunrise or sunset, always use an ND Filter to make those colors and sun flares pop, that alone will make your shots 10x more exciting if you place them right.
