Behind The Lens

Location

This was in the basement of a late 1800s county Jail.

Time

It was afternoon and the perfect time for the light to start spilling in thru the basement window.

Lighting

The soft window lighting was essential to help highlight the subject but still impose a sense of mystery on the scene. The afternoon light came in the perfect direction to help highlight the red chair.

Equipment

Nikon D7500, SIgma 50-100 1.8, Oben tripod

Inspiration

The historical county jail was closing for good but I wanted to get a photo that was a bit different than the typical jail photo someone would take. The red chair stood out in the basement's darkness where inmates would have to work. Each room in the basement was color coordinated. I found a small piece of tape on the wall indicating the room's designation. I gave some thought and felt giving the chair a sense of being by aiming it towards the window as though it earned to get out.

Editing

I shoot in Raw and increased the texture and clarity adjustments in the Camera Raw software. A slight decrease of the highlight completed it.

In my camera bag

I have two manual Lensbaby lenses. A sigma ultra-wide, wide angle, and telephoto.

Feedback

Do as much in camera as you possibly can. Find some old abandoned locations that are local to your area. Textures help give the place its character but the lighting will bring it to life.
