Location
This photo was taken at Morris Bridge Park along the Hillsborough River in Tampa, Florida. There is a nice boardwalk there allows you to enjoy nature. It also is a great location for photography.Time
This was taken in the afternoon, with the sun still fairly high in the sky. It was cloudy however, so the sunlight was softer than it would be on a cloudless day.Lighting
This was shot with natural light only. She was standing facing a bridge that crosses the river. The light was coming from the sky above the bridge. I experimented with where she was standing before I took this shot. If she moved closer to the bridge then the light was coming mostly from above, and did not look good. If she moved farther from the bridge, the light started to become flat because it was a cloudy day. But at this particular location the sky was perfectly situated above the bridge to give some nice directional lighting. In fact, the light falling on her face matches the studio lighting style known as Rembrandt lighting.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon Z6 and a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lens. It was shot handheld with natural light only.Inspiration
I enjoy nature photography, even when I'm not shooting portraits. I had visited this park before, just to hike around. But I noted that many of the features of the park would make beautiful settings for a portrait photoshoot, so when it came time to do this photoshoot it was a logical location.Editing
I frequently spend a lot of time post-processing my photos. But in this particular case, the original photo captured Kara's natural beauty so I felt that little needed to be done.In my camera bag
My camera for portrait photography is the Nikon Z6, and the main lens I use is the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lens. I've never felt the need for a longer lens than that, but sometimes I do want something wider angle, in which case I switch to a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens, or a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 lens.Feedback
If shooting natural light, it's good if you can recognize how elements of the environment affect the light on your subject. Learn when it's good to shoot in the shade. Learn when it's good to have the sun in front of the subject, and when it's better if the sun backlights the subject. Look for objects like walls that reflect light and experiment with how they can be used to add a unique look to your photos.
