I'm so glad I was quick enough to capture this!

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the ugliest room in my house. The utility/storage room in the basement. I set up a folding table, set up my one light (needed an extension cord for power). There was extra drywall sheets against the concrete wall from when we built a room, so that made up my background.

Time

This was an 'on the whim' photo shoot one morning. After adopting our first chicks, I started following a lot of instagrams where people raised chickens as pets. I saw some of the cutest photos and knew I had to take the opportunity while they were still little. So glad I did!

Lighting

Really, I work with what I have for lighting. However, this room had no windows. I could have just used my flash but I was worried about scaring the chicks. My light was nearby. I set it up pretty close to the front, to the side and raised up almost above them.

Equipment

For this image, I used my Nikon D600 and my Nikon 60mm 2.8

Inspiration

Happy Hen Haven is one of my favorite new chicken instagram pages. She takes incredible photos of her chicks (mostly silkie). She inspired me to take photos of my chicks and as I was getting my light, I saw this tiny couch that I had only ever used once about 7 years ago. I knew I needed to hang onto it! It definitely came in handy and will again soon!

Editing

This was a pretty easy image to edit. There wasn't a whole lot to do. I raised the exposure a bit, took out the edge of the table in back and blended with the background, which I understand kind of makes no sense with my son on the other side, but the line being gone is less distracting. I did change the tone of the table and background to be a bit more tan than the boring gray tone.

In my camera bag

Nikon D600, Tamron lenses: 10-24, 24-70, and 70-200. Nikon 60mm, 2 yongnuo flashes.

Feedback

This was more of a candid shot. My son was helping me keep the chickens from jumping over the back. Ahsoka (we named our chicks after Star Wars characters) kept turning around to look for him every time he moved away. It was the funniest and cutest thing and I'm glad I captured this sweet memory.
