As a Master Naturalists of Montana and a rabid photographer I am in the woods quite a bit. This particular day I found myself between Kalispell and the Canada border looking for evidence of Mountain Lion activity and came across this young Canada Lynx.Time
it was sometime between mid morning and early afternoon.Lighting
lighting was tough, in Montana we suffer with an inversion during much of the winter. Low light situation combined with being in a heavily wooded area created a natural darker area.Equipment
at the time I shot this I was using a Canon 5D mark iii combined with a Canon 100 - 400 mm lens. A bit old lens but still very serviceable.Inspiration
When I caught this young cat checking me out I felt extremely lucky. I was afraid it would take off before I could snap the shot.Editing
at the time I was using Classic Lightroom, I probably increased the exposure and contrast while decreasing the shadows. I never over clarify past 29.In my camera bag
My camera bag includes lens cleaning equipment along with a primary camera body, ND filters, allen wrenches, two or three lenses depending on where I will be photographing a can of bear spray,Feedback
when photographing nature use a telephoto lens and research the area you are going to see what kind of animals you may encounter. Study the habits of the local fauna, feeding habits, sleep cycles, weather forecasts and be prepared to even be lucky!
