Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taking a few years ago from the balcony in my parent's flat in Cadiz, Spain, in a very similar building to the one in the photo

Time

Late afternoon. The block of flats in the photo is facing west so there was a gentle light reflecting on the windows as the sun was starting to go down (you can see a hint of that on the window in the top left corner). Unfortunately that is not reflected on the photo as i was more focused in capturing the "ugliness" of the building that the natural light of that afternoon, hence the choice of B&W

Lighting

Like I said before, capturing the light was not my priority when I took this photo. Obviously I wanted to make sure there was enough natural light so that my photo could look neat and sharp without the use of a tripod but the colour of the light wasn't important to me when I took this photo. I knew, even before I took it, I wanted to edit it into B&W.

Equipment

Nikon D40, hand-held, 50-200 mm lense

Inspiration

I wanted to challenge the view that, to take photos of typically Spanish locations, you need to focus on the sea, ancient monuments, picturesque white-washed villages, lovely food or very good looking people. I am based in the UK now, but I am in Spanish and for nearly 30 years of my life I lived in a block of flats like that. This is what most Spanish people live in. Nothing glamorous about it.

Editing

Very little. I used a website called Picasa (can I mention names?) to turn the photo into B&W and adjust contrast a little bit.

In my camera bag

Just my Nikon D40, a couple of batteries, my 18-55 lense and my 55-200 lense and little else, really. I am very amateur!

Feedback

If you are starting in photography, like me, be prepared to gradually get away from cliches and common places as soon as you start confident. If you take part in a photo competition about food, take a shot of a decaying banana. If the topic is Spain, take a photo of a 1970's-built block of state council flats.
