Amazingly captured photo. As a trumpet artist, this speaks volumes! Is that Mike in the photo? Also, lighting should be more balanced from all sides. Perhaps even long-exposure would help vividness.

Location
I took this photo at my home studio in San Diego, California. Marty, the musician on the photo, had just been picked up and sponsored by XO Brass and needed a photo for the company's website for his profile. He came over and we did about 5 different setups.Time
I think it was taken late afternoon.Lighting
If I remember correctly I used continuous "cool" lighting for this photo and we also used natural light outside for other ones during this shoot.Equipment
The camera is my old Canon 5D MkII and my manual focus Canon FD 85mm f1.2 adapted to ef mount. I used cool fluorescent lights which allow me to work quickly.Inspiration
Marty is a very charismatic guy with the "rockstar" look. We wanted this shot to be different from your typical musician headshot.Editing
Added some contrast and sharpening in PS.In my camera bag
Canon 5D Mk II, Canon EF 70-200mm F4 L lens, Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8 L lens, Canon FD 85mm F1.2 L (adapted to ef mount). Back up camera I switch between Sony and Fuji and I'm seriously considering switching to Sony full frame as my main camera.Feedback
I would say try something different that highlights the essence of your subject. Get some "typical" shots and then experiment with different poses and setups.
