Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the river on the walk to view Mt Cook (the tallest mountain in New Zealand) in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

Time

Early afternoon

Lighting

it was very misty and rainy. It actually fined up after we left. No artificial lighting used.

Equipment

I use my handy Sony A6000 and had my 16-50mm on at 16. I didn’t even own a tripod at this point in time so would have likely been taken hand held or positioned on a rock

Inspiration

It was just a gorgeous scene with the misty mountains on one side with the contrasting green on the other side both leading into the ice cold glacier river. I just wanted to capture it the best I could

Editing

The sharpness was increased to really make those rocks pop and the colour boosted for those greens

In my camera bag

My little camera bag is now pretty much at full capacity with my 16-50mm, a lovely fixed 50mm and a 55-210mm... might be time to invest in bigger bag ;)

Feedback

Use the weather to your advantage. Sometimes the worst weather days can make great shots (just don’t sacrifice your equipment). Don’t be afraid to get into the scene. I love clambering as far in as I safely can (particularly with rivers now I think about it...) for shots that feel a bit more natural and at one with the setting. Once again though, safety first. Finally, always travel with an open, creative mind and try to balance composition / precision with having fun and capturing memories.
