Location
There was abandoned train tracks in the woods I scouted earlier and I wanted to shoot there during winter time.Time
This was taken around 3 PM. The sun was getting low and temperature dropped down to -10 degrees celsius.Lighting
This is one light setup. I kept shutter speed fast enough to cut out ambient light and fired a flash through white umbrella from the left side.Equipment
Camera: Canon 5dMk2 Lens: Canon 85mm f1.8 Light: Elinchrom Quadra flash through white umbrellaInspiration
Actually this wasn't planned at all. We were shooting another set of photos when my model had this idea that she could sit in the snow and act like a girl who's lost. I thought that would look cool and at that moment I had this picture in my mind. So she changed outfit in the freezing cold weather and sat in the snow. I quickly took few pictures so she could warm up again. Credit goes pretty much to my lovely model Dilan Bal.Editing
It required some cloning to get rid of unwanted branches that were distracting. Also some dodging and burning is involved. And finally slight color toning to add that mysterious night time feel.In my camera bag
Usually I take more than I need when I shoot on location. That's not a problem if I don't need to hike but sometimes I feel I could use a trolley. Everything from spare batteries to cleaning cloths and of course two cameras with lenses and a tripod. I use Elinchrom Quadra if I need a flash and then suitable softboxes or umbrellas are needed. Even if I don't plan to use a flash I have a speedlight with me just in case. I always have some water to drink and in this case also hot tea was made. Plastic bags are very useful to protect things and some leather straps can come in handy.Feedback
This is very simple to achieve. Only one light is involved but that is the thing. Learn to use flashes. And learn how to use high speed sync. This will give you very powerful tool to get amazing results. Also remember to keep your models warm.
