Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Pickerington, OH in a snowy dog park.

Time

This was taken in early afternoon, just after a fairly decent snow storm affected the Columbus Ohio area in 2018.

Lighting

This is natural and reflected lighting from being outside in mid-day in snow.

Equipment

Canon 80d, tamron 24-70 mm f/2.8, handheld.

Inspiration

My friend who rescued Rocco- who was a retired police dog, with medical issues and his former owner post police work couldn’t financially afford to keep him. My friend was a veterinary student at the time, took Rocco in for his final years and we wanted a portrait that reflected his big personality and did justice to his story.

Editing

Slight crop and conversion from RAW to JPG.

In my camera bag

My bag varies depending on the shoot. That weekend was mainly portraiture so it was a smaller bag. Contained canon 80d, tamron 24-70mm f/2.8, 50 mm prime, and tamron 70-200 mm f/2.8

Feedback

Working with animals always presents a challenge. Rocco wasn’t posed for this image, it happened naturally as we played in the snow. It took about an hour to achieve, by tossing his toys, letting him roll around and chase us in the snow. There was a moment he paused and looked at me with snow on his muzzle and happy doggy smile and that was the moment. Take your time on shoots whether human or animal the results are worth it.
