Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Pinawa in the South Eastern part of Manitoba, Canada.

Time

My brother and I set our alarm clocks for 5am in order to be at this location on time for sunrise. We got there in the dark and scouted our a few compositions while we waited for the sun to light up the clouds. Was worth the short sleep!

Lighting

I waited for the sun to rise just above the horizon so the fall colours would be lit up for the shot that I wanted.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my DJI Phantom 3 Pro. This is a vertical pano made up of 6 shots and a separate exposure for the sky.

Inspiration

Having never been to this exact spot before, I spent a good hour before sunrise figuring out the shots that I wanted. With the fall colours and the winding stream this was a given that this shot needed to be taken!

Editing

This is a 6 shot vertical pano, separate exposure for the sky. Stitched in Auto Pano Pro. I blended the sky in using Photoshop. Colours were achieved and enhanced using 3D LUT Creator. All other editing such as curves, dodging and burning, all done in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag is a Sony A7r iii, Zeiss lenses (12mm and 50mm), Hoya Filters, Manfrotto Tripod and Ball head. DJI Phantom 3 Pro.

Feedback

It doesn’t always work to get the shots you would like at a new location. Planning is definitely a must which includes weather, direction of surrounding objects/landscapes, location of sunrise/sunset/Milky Way/Aurora. Be creative, try different heights of the same composition until you find the height that maximizes your shot. And finally, make sure you’re at your spot for “the moment”!
