Behind The Lens

Location

This was actually shot in a bedroom on location.

Time

Time for this shoot was pretty much the middle of the night, it was the only time the model and I could synchronize as our schedules were very conflicting. The time of day made it a very quiet and intimate shoot also as there were no distractions still awake!

Lighting

there is no special lighting involved in this particular shot, it is a single speedlight in a 24" square softbox on a mid level setting.

Equipment

This was shot using my Canon 5D Mk-IV and the canon 24-70 f2.8L @ f7.1 ISO 100 1/200. Work was done hand held with the off camera flash on a tripod roughly 6 feet from the subject.

Inspiration

Most obviously the Subject! She is a beautiful model and happens to have amazingly perfect curves to her lower back and derriere~ She told me she receive compliments on it all the time so it seemed appropriate to give some specific focus on it during this shoot as we were already doing nude work. As with most models, men and women, she has some hang ups about her body and her appearance, so focusing some shooting on something that the model feels good about is always a good way to help make them feel confident about the whole shoot

Editing

There is very little post work on this one, obviously dropping the saturation for getting the Color digital shot to B&W.. I was working toward a Low Key look and doing a low light photo study, so the blacks are pushed down and highlights up a bit, but nothing drastic. I love the beautiful texture of her skin and wanted to be careful not to blow out the natural feel of it.

In my camera bag

This is difficult to answer as it depends on the destination and the subject matter, but for low key nudes and portraits, it is usually 1-2 speedlights, My Canon 5D Mk-IV and 7D as a backup body. 24-70 f2.8L, 85 1.4L IS, 70-200 for when I have the extra space to really shoot to compress the background, and my Nifty 50 & 35 (Canon 1.4 in both cases) is ALWAYS with me. And at least 1 light stand and a Vanguard Tripod

Feedback

Well, the obvious advice is to find a subject as perfect as my model was! :) Beyond that, play a lot with the lighting! When working with a single light low key setup, there are a lot of angle options for both the lighting and the shooting position that can lead to VERY dramatic contrasts that help make a low key shot pop!! Above all! SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT!!! That's what it's all about! Every click of the shutter brings you one click closer to being as great as you want to be and every shoot teaches you something...ESPECIALLY with lighting! Remember, your medium is not film or digital sensors....The photographer's medium is LIGHT, Master it and you will always be happy with your results!!!!!
