Location
This photo was taken in Los Angeles, California. I used to do a lot of portraits, but now I mostly do it as a hobby taking pictures of things that catch my eye. Like this picture of my new and happy puppy.Time
This picture has Sunday's written all over it. I remember it was taken in the early afternoon after a long game of fetch, when she was finally tired enough to sit still for a few seconds.Lighting
It was important to me as a portrait of my dog, to make it as bright and friendly as possible. The difficult part of that is her coat is sleek and black, so it was a huge challenge to get the right exposure of her body without losing detail of the patio.Equipment
This was taken hand-held with a Nikon D800 and an old 28mm Nikkor lens while I was sitting on the ground sometime in between throws. There was no way I could have used a tripod and still been able to have the flexibility to follow her around.Inspiration
Oh goodness, that face! Just look at her smile.Editing
There was light post-processing to bring back some of the contrast that was lost in exposing for her dark coat and the high shutter speed of getting her in action. In my camera bag
I love prime lenses. So anytime in my bag I have a 28mm, 50mm and 85mm. But with the added weight of the extra lenses I try to bring only what I'll use and leave the rest of my gear at home.Feedback
For animal portraits, I really have to focus on the animal and not the photo. If they're happy and having fun the picture is a winner, but if not then they're just as likely going to walk over to the couch and fall asleep.
