Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while snorkelling in Bora Bora, French Polynesia. It was unusual for me to take my camera as the underwater housing is quite bulky, normally i only use it when I'm scuba diving. I was very glad i took it this day.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon sun, when the turtles were actively drawing extra breaths preparing to shut down and sleep for the night. The water was flat calm on this day and i have to say Ive really never seen such vivid reflections. I added this shot to my favourites collection in August 2014.

Lighting

No false lighting was required for this shot. I was totally spoilt by the natural light drenching the surface of the water and illuminating the turtles shell.

Equipment

It was taken with a Canon G12 in a Recsea underwater housing, using a fisheye lens. The very top of the lens was above the water, capturing a glimpse of the trees and sky.

Inspiration

My biggest passions are underwater photography and marine conservation, so i am always looking for an opportunity to get my camera wet (not a lot of people will say that!). On this occasion i had heard of a turtle rehabilitation centre, where sick and injured turtles were taken to recover and by 'appointment only' you could step into the pool with the turtles and watch them feed.....and of course what a wonderful opportunity to photography these angelic beauties.

Editing

There was no post-processing involved.

In my camera bag

My bag weighs so much i generally keep it in a wheelie carry on bag so i don't have to carry it. Inside you will find my Canon G12, spare battery and charger, my Recsea underwater housing, a fisheye lens, my Sea & Sea YS-01 strobe, a Sola Photo 500 light and charger, spare AA batteries and always an extra memory card!

Feedback

Patience is a virtue when is comes to capturing any animal. Its always better to wait for the animal to come to you than to try to approach it yourself as more then likely you will just scare it away and end up getting the clasical shot of the back of a turtle swimming away.
