Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken near the summit of an old volcano, just next to the crater.

Time

There is nothing like golden hour! We organised this shoot for late afternoon, hopeful for a sunset. When we arrived there was a heavy storm rolling in which threatened to ruin our plans but fortunately it passed just to the side of the mountain allowing the sun to break through the clouds just on time.

Lighting

I absolutely love the contrast of sunlight against a stormy sky so when I chance upon a fading storm, the camera comes out quickly! There is huge lighting variation in this series because of the weather we encountered and in this shot, the lightest drizzle of rain began to fall just as the sun began to set.

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon 5D mk3 and my Canon 50mm f1.2 lens.

Inspiration

This was taken in the middle of a family session. We were really lucky with the weather breaking when it did and Lola's impromptu dance in the sun shower was so perfectly timed!

Editing

I process all my images in Lightroom- here I will adjust my tones and white balance, contrast and clarity and I then send them to Photoshop for subtle retouching.

In my camera bag

My Canon 5D3. I'm lost without my primes! My go-to lens is my 50mm f1.2 but I equally love the 35mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.2, each for their sharpness, low-light performance and sublime bokeh.

Feedback

When I started carrying my camera with me nearly everywhere I go, it allowed me to capture those unexpected magical moments with my own kids and there have been many times I've been so grateful to have it! Working with children means I have to be on my toes anyway, but add working with changeable NZ weather and I have to be prepared for anything. I don't always get the shot I envision but I think being spontaneous and open to whatever weather I'm presented with, while letting kids take their time and react to the environment freely, results in more honest and meaningful imagery in general.
