Location
This photo was taken in a Burbank studio where one of my mentors, David Jakle, a renowned fashion photographer, was teaching about recreating light setups in different time of the day.Time
We started setting up at 9am and this particular shot was during lunch time 12-1pm inside a studio where my fellow photographers where sharing one big studio divided in four.Lighting
We were challenged to use as minimal as we can like 1-2 lights only. I used ACUTE 2 2400 POWER PACK. From the left side of the model the light was supported by a tripod placed higher that the model. The light was used with elinchrom octa banks "74 with grid and on the other side was another same amount of light but only shaped with chimera onto dome with grid. This created the rim light effect on the model. The light was intentioned to produced only with less power so as it would only expose some parts of the model's essential features as we were only looking forward on the character of the portrait and not on the person itself.Equipment

My model, Terrance, is also an actor and an athlete. His acting ability has contributed a lot in achieving the look that we were looking for - natural sporty fine-art worthy look. When I first met him in YMCA, he was jumping from ground to 3-5ft level (compared to steps pf a ladder), I already wanted to take photos of him as an active athlete that show power, endurance and strong character of energy.Editing
Yes. Light retouches were made as I am not a big fan of extreme photoshop editing. First, I cleaned the look the model making that non essential items were erased and should not be there. Since I am a big fan of black and white, I was not hesitant but went straight to turning it to BNW. It is easier to eliminate unnecessary color that can distort the storytelling side of the photo. BNW is strong in focusing the main story of the this photo.In my camera bag

It is very important to know your model, his natural self and his strengths and that is where you focus in order to reveal his strong character. You can never find any difficulty in making pose what you need and expressing his deep emotions and feelings will be incredible. Never try to make your model act out what he is not made of because it will not have that 100% of himself.
