Location
The photo was taken in a reptile exhibit.Time
The lighting was fixed indoor, but we came in the early morning, around 8am, as early as the exhibit opens.Lighting
The lighting was extremely challenging, I was actually shooting at f4 and over iso 3000.Equipment
Nikon d7200 + 300mm f4Inspiration
Very good timing and a great deal of luck, I took this one shot in passing, wasn't expecting to get anything out of it really.Editing
I did a degree of noise reduction and small contrast adjustments. In my camera bag
I tend to rely on my 300mm f4 for any long shots I want, it has a perfect blend of reach, sharpness, and flexibility to shoot anywhere. I always have that stuffed into one of my Lowepro bags right next to my go to lenses: Nikon 50 f1.4g, sigma 18-35 f1.8, sigma 50-100 f1.8. I do like to keep a flash or two handy, usually with a wireless transmitter. The Peak Design slide helps keep everything on me, along with the captureclip.Feedback
Shooting animals in enclosures is difficult, sometimes they won't give you what you want, you need to be patient with them. Keep coming back, practice your techniques, and keep shooting, the more you shoot, the more chance you will capture that one special moment. It is good practice for catching them in the wild as well. Having a fast card with a large buffer can help, but the most important thing is to learn to be sensitive to timing, animals move less when they are being watched, so avoid crowds and come when the local temps are closest to their natural habitat, you will find them much more active and posing.
