The Stark General Store was owned and operated by the Stark Bros. Probably the buildings most closely identified with St. Elmo during its final boom of c.1908-17 and during its decline after 1926. The Stark family was responsible for keeping the identity of St. Elmo alive long after mining ceased and miners left. They purchased most of the surviving buildings and kept them in use as vacation cabins after 1924. The store and hotel was the center of tourism in the town for some 30 years, serving as post office, telegraph office, general store, cabin rental agency, and boarding house. Without the Stark's passionate dedication to preserving St. Elmo, little of its integrity would have survived. Ref. Library of Congress.
