Location
This picture was taken in the extraordinary castle "Chateau Challain-la-Potherie" in France near Angers. We had the chance to have full access to the castle with amazing rooms and props. The owners allowed us to move everything around including furnitures, decorations and props to assembly our own unique sets.Time
All happened in the afternoon after the model's makeup and styling.Lighting
Three light sources were used, the main soft box were directed to the face and model, the second soft box to the scene and a third (Fresnel spot) to the background.Equipment
I used a Canon 5dsr with the canon 24-70 2.8L mkII on a very old and strong tripod and three studio lights.Inspiration
Well it is impossible not to be inspired by the model, the castle, the dress, the head piece, the make-up, the hair. Actually you have to keep a clear mind to keep focused on every detail and to place all elements perfectly together...Editing
There was not that much post processing, a little bit of dodge and burn on the face, adding the sun light to materialize the main source, some smog on the ground, but the whole background, decoration and model was real, no composition was made.In my camera bag
Canon EOS 5DS R Canon 24-70mm L f2.8 II Canon 70-200mm L f2.8 is II Canon 85mm L f1.2 Canon 17-40 mm L f4 40 years old Gizo tripod with a big manfrotto rotule ball. Studio flashes and soft boxes.Feedback
I do not have the presumption to give any advice, I will only share my point of view. First of all, this shot would not have been nearly that complemented without a talented production team including an experienced model, who was able to empathize the role, a great makeup artist, a headpiece designer, a dress and corset designer and of course this unique location! Regarding the light setup I always try to keep things simple: the main light of course is always directed to the main subject, and the model's face. the additional lights help to create the mood and to bring out the details of the environment. The next step would be a setup of the scene at full length: adjustment of the dress, changing the position of a pillow that maybe doesn't look pretty in a certain angle, moving or adding some props... for this particular shot I added two candlesticks to fill an empty space into the frame of the picture. Once this is done I can have fun and help the model to find the attitude I require. I wanted her to look like a dramatic surreal goddess. Last but not least, I made sure, that not only the model's face turns out perfectly sharp, but also most of the details of the beautiful scene.
