Woke up super early before the sun, drove for 2 hours to the border of my province. Packed light as I knew I would have a bit of a hike before I got to the spot I wanted. Finally reached this magical place just in time for the light to present itself!
Autumn is a pretty special time where I come from. The colours become amazingly vivid and bright. I was lucky to get an extra chilly morning where frost covered everything. Until the first light from the sun managed to melt it all away. Leaving an extraordinary mist that blanketed everything.

I took this photo in the Whiteshell Provincial Park Manitoba Canada. It is the start of what we affectionately call the Canadian shield!Time
I travelled out here really early in the morning. I wanted to be there before sunrise so I would get some nice morning glow of the lakes. To my surprise I was greeted by this amazing fog that covered everything! It was so haunting and peaceful. Truly a typical Canadian scene in my opinion. Really what nature is all about.Lighting
I really wanted to extenuate the fog with the morning light beams shining through. It took some time to get into position before the light had moved on. I also wanted to add that little bit of mystery about what might be around the corner? Which is where the fog was pouring out from.Equipment
I use a Sony A7 II mirrorless camera. For this particular shot I used a Sony lens as well. A 70-200mm zoomed in all the way to 200. I find taking landscape shots with a telephoto lens really brings out the subject more than it would with a typical wide angle. The lens compression also allows to get some extra buttery bokeh!Inspiration
I really went out that morning to get the last of the Autumn colours. I never thought I would get a scene like I did that day. This is what real photography is in my opinion. Taking what you are given, and finding something amazing. Not always predetermined.Editing
Yes normally I post process quite a bit. On this particular shot I did not do very much. I cloned out a few unsightly branches, brought up the highlights a little, and really just tried to smooth out the fog. I really liked what I had shot right out of the camera. But I shoot in RAW, which means there need to be some colour correction, and sharpening added in post as well.In my camera bag
Now that I have moved from Canon, to Sony, I don't carry that much really. I bring my camera, Sony A7 II, with battery grip with an extra battery. A few lenses that usually consist of a 70-200mm, a 16-35mm. Or I will take out my Zeiss 21mm, and Canon 50mm with meta bones adapter. I also have a Manfrotto tripod, and a remote.Feedback
The biggest hurdle to overcome when taking a shot like this is getting up early enough. Everywhere I have travelled in this world, the best shots were due to staying out late, or getting up early. And it doesn't hurt to know the area. I like to research a little before I go to any location. Also check with the local weather forecast to see what your day might be like. They will also let you know when sunrise, and sunset will be. This is very important if you hope to be ready in time for the magic show ;)
