Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken near the Water Garden in Bushy Park, London. It's a bus ride from where I live so a regular haunt.

Time

This was mid afternoon. I work freelance so occasionally have impromptu breaks in work or finish early if I'm lucky. Mid afternoon is not normally my choice, but it gets me out the house.

Lighting

It was a relatively hazy day as many were in August last year, so it was bright but fairly diffuse lighting with that. I found I had my camera set to a stop or so of positive exposure compensation for weeks.

7D, Canon 70-200mm F/4L, handheld

Inspiration

I was returning back from a walk about the park. In August I spent quite a while watching Kestrels and accrued quite a few shots, some of which are in my images here on ViewBug. On my way back on this occasion I spotted a herd of deer in among the blackberries. I was hoping to get something comical and comical I got! It was quite spur of the moment and I left shortly after so as not to disturb them.

Editing

I shifted a few colours about to make them pop and that was it really. This is very close to how it was on the back of the camera, albeit cropped.

In my camera bag

Travelling comparatively light is kinda my thing. My 7D, my 70-200mm F/4L, perhaps my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, are regulars to the camera bag. I always take spare batteries, a spare memory card and a lens cleaning pen. I normally pack a flask of tea, a banana, and something like oatcake biscuits as they provide energy without a crazy sugar spike. Also as I spend a lot of time doing things like walking through long grass, photographing those in long grass or sitting in it, there's a risk of ticks carrying Lyme's Disease. As I don't like the idea of my bones rotting from the inside out, I carry a tick removal tool and antiseptic wipes for the inevitable day when I have to deal with a tick or two.

Feedback

Take time to observe the movement of the animals. I happened to see this herd walking this direction in the first place, on my way into the park, so I was intending to swing by on my way out regardless. Perhaps don't head out the door expecting a comedy moment to land on your lap, but I would say be open minded about what you shoot and try to create images that show something of personality, not just a straight forward image documenting what you saw. It's a cliché but try to get a story in there.
