Behind The Lens

Location

Ilkley Moor - I was in my garden that overlooks the Moor. I saw smoke and fairly aggressive looking fire breaking out in the heather. Being inquisitive I thought I'd take a closer look so grabbed my camera and took a walk up. The fire covered a fair amount of land and was growing....

Time

This photo was taken in the early afternoon.

Lighting

The light was interesting - it was a cold Autumn day and very bright. The thick smoke obviously made the left of the frame pretty dark. It was hard to get the right combination of settings to expose the detail of the smoke & landscape but not blow out the rest of the photo with the bright sun light

Equipment

Handheld Canon EOS30D with an EF 17-85 lens

Inspiration

This was quite a large fire that would have a long term impact on Ilkley Moor. I wanted to get a closer look and capture the moment.

Editing

I had to lighten the smoke a little. Other than that, I was lucky to catch a fairly good exposure without too much processing.

In my camera bag

Either my Leica M9 with a 50mm 1.4 Summilux or Canon EOS5D Mk 3 with a 24-105 L, basic pancake 50mm and a 70-300 L zoom

Feedback

Keep your eyes open - it's amazing what we just pass by without noticing. If you see something memorable, take a photo. It doesn't matter whether you use an iPhone or SLR - capture the moment! Take a few shots with different settings. It's amazing what you can achieve with Photoshop or Lightroom if you have a good base to start with.
