Location
This Photo of a Lioness was taken at Yorkshire Wildlife Park Not the wild plains of Africa as its appearance might (hopefully) suggest :)Time
It was a late December afternoon just before closing time and the park was just about deserted, i was making my way to the exit when this Lioness broke away from the pride and slowly walked up the ridge and into the light of the low setting sun, I kept taking photo's as she climbed the ridge and as she reached the summit she stood and roared with her face bathed in the red glow of the sun.Lighting
The best times of day for photography are when the sun is low in the sky, although this can't always be achieved, this is why I love photographing wildlife in the winter, the low light adds so much drama to the image. I was very fortunate to have this beautiful beast walk up into the very special light that evening.Equipment
Very simple equipment, a Canon EOS 600d with a Canon 70-300mm lens at the full 300mm shot at 1/400th of a second at f5.6 ISO 640 shot in manual mode with auto ISO because of the rapidly changing light conditionsInspiration
The emergence of the lioness into the light is what makes this image what it is.. It's all about the light!Editing
Only to the background really there were some power lines and a building in the background that really detracted from the image so i cloned those out, The Lioness is pretty much as taken on the dayIn my camera bag
Too much!! Depending on where I am going and what I am shooting.. my normal kit for wildlife is a Canon 80d with a Sigma 150-500mm attached, my backup is a Canon 600d with a sigma 70-300mm on it which is usually on a sling at my side. Other kit i usually have with me for general use is a Canon 10-18mm wide angle lens which is a superb piece of kit that i love to use for landscape and even portrait for close up work. An old Canon 18-55 Mk1 kit lens which is tremendously sharp and a couple of primes to choose from for portrait or indoor sports work, Always at least a couple of spare batteries and memory cards and a microfibre cloth is a must.. Plus a kagoule for that unexpected shower.. very light and packs away very small Big enough to cover myself plus my gear!Feedback
It's all about the light, and that means timing your shoot to suit whenever possible. The beauty of digital is you can can shoot off as many shots as you like to get that ONE stand out image, dont be afraid to use fast bursts if you sense something is about to happen, better to discard 10 shots than to miss the money shot by waiting too long.. remember with wildlife if you see it before you shoot then you have missed the shot!
