Location
This photo was taken at an abandoned school in Pittsburgh that I found on a walk. I walked in on this scene in the main hallway and was instantly drawn to it.Time
It was early afternoon.Lighting
I lucked out with this picture. The sharp contrast in the lighting instantly drew me to this wall. The intense contrast between the light and the dark really set the mood for this scene.Equipment
This picture was taken with my basic Nikon D-3200 and a kit lens.Inspiration
When I entered the space, I was immediately drawn to the sharp edges of the lighting. The natural lighting looked like a sharp spotlight drawing attention to this interesting wall. Second, I was amused by the contrast between the "children want to play here" sign and the "abandon all hope ye who enter here" graffiti; the juxtaposition seemed appropriate for a school. I feel like this photo perfectly captured the environment of this abandoned school.Editing
No.In my camera bag
I enjoy equipment that does not involved a lot of set-up, it is important to capture in the moment. These days I just bring my camera with a lens with a wide range.Feedback
When photographing abandoned buildings, it is important to keep your mind and your eyes open. Abandoned buildings are easy targets, but it can be easy to forget about composition or go for a predictable shot. Take your time to really look around and notice unusual details or compositions, these subtle aspects will best capture the mood of a space.
