Behind The Lens
Location
Photo was taking in the wheatbelt in Western AustraliaTime
This image was taken just before sundown, the sun was just as it hit the horizon.Lighting
Well if you look closely at the image you will see behind the mare (Mother of the foal) someones legs, this lady was on poop duty she was stirring up the dust and in the golden light made magic so I asked her to pick up some dust and flick it in the air for me, I waited for the dust to settle a little bit and took this shot. It was a little big of a magic Autumn day with the added bonus of the mare and foal and there ownerEquipment
I'm unsure now but this would have be the 70-200mm Sigma lens on the 5DMII hand held no flash just natural lightInspiration
I wanted a soft image in a harsh environment, to represent the reality of the harsh wheatbelt but it can also be the most vulnerable place to live for both human and animal. I wanted to capture the pure essence of why we as horse people do what we do and place everything on the line for our animalsEditing
I only added a little light to the mare (Mummy horse)In my camera bag
I normally now have my 5DMIII and my 70-200mm Canon lens this is the lens I use 99% of the timeFeedback
You will need to wait waiting is key the light needs to be at the lowest point before going down, spot meter for the brightest part of your image and the darkest part I always go a stop higher then the mid reading then tone down the highlights later in post if need be. Have fun and take your time
