Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in our backyard after a fresh snowfall. It was an unseasonably warm day despite the snow, so it was a perfect opportunity to bundle up my little one for her first introduction to making snow angels!Time
This was taken at around 3 pm just before the sun hid behind surrounding buildings.Lighting
While I was shooting I wished it was an overcast day to soften the shadows and make the light less directional, but I ended up really liking the long shadows in this image. The "angel wings" would also be less prominent had it been overcast, so it all worked out!Equipment
My camera isn't fancy - it's a Canon Rebel XTi. One day I suppose I'll upgrade, but the lens I used is a 2.8 17-55 mm which is my favourite! No other equipment was used - it would have been tricky carrying gear AND a baby!Inspiration
The freshly fallen snow was so beautiful, and it was such a warm day for a Canadian November. I just had to take my little one outside to play!Editing
I did do some post processing in Lightroom. I lightened the shadows and darkened the highlights in order to make the lighting less harsh. I also warmed up the image just slightly. In my camera bag
I am a minimalist - I carry my camera with a 2.8 17-55mm lens on it, and keep a 1.4 50mm prime lens at hand. And always a spare battery! If I'm doing a newborn shoot or a wedding I'll carry some more stuff with me like a macro lens or a speedlite, but generally that's it.Feedback
For this image I shot at ISO 400, f/8 1/250 sec +1.7 step. After that the only trick is to stand as directly overtop of your subject as possible without getting your own feet in the shot!
