Location
The photo was taken at San Sebastisn on the north coast of Spain. The area is very popular with surfers, although this was one of the more family friendly beaches.Time
The photo was taken around lunchtime.Lighting
The sun is very bright there, and catches the waves nicely in the photo.Equipment
The photo was just taken with a fairly basic automatic camera, a Canon SX230. No other equipment, not even a tripod.Inspiration
I love trying to find an unusual take on things. There were a large number of people trying to surf, and there was a range of abilities. I liked the sheer number of people I could get in the photo at once, all ding different things. The tilt-shift effect worked really well as the people were all quite small.Editing
The tilt-shift effect was added using Photoshop Elements. In my camera bag
Just the compact camera! You don't need a huge amount of expensive equipment to experiment with lots of different styles and techniques.Feedback
Just keep taking as many different types of photo as possible. Everybody takes photos of everything these days, so try and look at a potential scene from a slightly different perspective than the obvious. What can you do to take a different photo from the person standing next to you? Don't be afraid to use post processing. Creating a photo is like creating a work of art, and you need to use all sorts of different techniques. Pressing the button on the camera is only one step!
