Location
During my travels as a member of Google Maps, this photo was taken on Interstate 57 in Southern Illinois, near the Missouri border.Time
It was late afternoon and the weather became very severe, with your typical Summer thunderstorms featured in the Midwestern United States.Lighting
The lighting in this was just unbelievable. The dark storm trailing underneath and behind, while the leading edge had a bluish/orange glow due to the fading sun ahead of it.Equipment
Nikon D7000 with a 24-70 mm lensInspiration
I've seen many shelf clouds during my travels, but none quite as spectacular as this one. We spotted it from a very long distance as it was moving East to West at a very high rate of speed (we were traveling south). It was just breathtaking to witness, with an obvious element of danger involved. I knew immediately that I had to pull off the highway and capture this moment before it was gone.Editing
I usually try to stay away from post processing on landscape photos, but this one required some tonal adjustments. In my camera bag
I take my cameras everywhere I go, and my go to equipment includes a Nikon D600 with a 24-70 mm f 2.8 lens, along with a Nikon D7000 and a 50 mm 1.8 prime.Feedback
Rule number one - ALWAYS take your camera with you (you never know what's going to pop up in front of your eyes). Rule number two - Patience. Lastly, practice, practice, practice.
