Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a photo safari to the Badlands of South Dakota in the Spring. We were travelling from our hotel in Wall, SD to an old ghost town called Scenic to take some photographs. Along the way we came across this old car sitting out in the middle of a field, and decided to stop and photograph it.

Time

This photo was taken at 10:47 AM, as we had just finished up our brunch after getting up at sunrise to photograph the early light, and were driving around to find some good middle of the day things to photograph.

Lighting

The lighting in this photo was nicely muted by the partly cloudy skies that I had that day. Had there been no cloud cover, I'm certain that my resulting images would have resulted in a much more contrasted

Equipment

This image was shot hand-held with a Canon 6D, 24-105 lens and a polarizing lens filter.

Inspiration

I love driving around during the day, after a morning sunrise shoot, looking for good things to shoot in the harsher light. Old buildings and junk yards are some great places to explore. For this photo, it was impossible not to stop, seeing it sitting out 100 yards or so from the road. I just had to watch out for the rattlesnakes.

Editing

Post processing was done in Lightroom and Photoshop. I primarily enhanced the colors and the contrast, which is typical in all of my landscape photos.

In my camera bag

When out running around during the day, looking for things to shoot, I typically have three lenses, my camera, and a couple of filters. My camera body is currently the 6D, I'm saving up for the Mark IV when it arrives. The lenses I carry with me are the Canon 24-104, Canon 70-200 2.8 (typically my go-to lens), and the new Tamron 150-600. The filters I like to use are an ND filter for the longer exposures, and a polarizer for the days of bright sunshine. Of course, you always want to have your tripod and remote release in tow as well.

Feedback

Drive around, explore, trespass (well try and get permission). It's amazing the things you can find to shoot in the middle of the day that will create wonderful images. Driving in the country often produces old tractors or barns that make wonderful shots.
