Great shot. Until you see the leaf you're not really sure how far or close or big or small the falls and rocks are. SUPER IMAGE with great clarity. Congratulations on being featured. -Lara

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Yosemite national park. My husband and I were driving to the valley in the park and there was a small stream that ran along the side of the road. As we rounded the corner I noticed this small waterfall and several leaves that were scattered around. After walking around I found this scene with the leaf on the rocks.

Time

It was around 3pm.

Lighting

The sun was very bright out, but there were trees that canopied the water. I chose not to use the flash, but instead utilize the natural light that was streaming through the trees.

Equipment

I used a canon 40D with a 2.8 70-200 mm lens set at 100mm. The ISO was 100 and the aperture was 7.1 and shutter speed was 0.30000s. The camera sat on a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with a Kirk ball head.

Inspiration

Whenever I see water I stop as it's such a wonderful showcase for photography. This particular scene, had great lighting and the perfect setup for a wonderful picture.

Editing

I did not do any post-processing.

In my camera bag

I have two camera bodies. One digital, 40D and one for color reversal, A2E. I carry my canon 2.8 70-200mm lens and a 17-40mm wide angle and a 100 mm Macro lens. Extra batteries, film, memory cards, polarizing filter, and a 2 stop Singh Ray ND filter and a plamp.

Feedback

Water is one of my favorite subjects to photograph. My main piece of advice is to use a tripod and a shutter release cord. Take the time to walk around and find the best angle to capture your photo and always check the viewfinder carefully as a stray branch or out of place object can easily ruin an otherwise beautiful photo. Lastly, I make the shutter speed a priority when photographing waterfalls, and take multiple shots at different speeds simply because the photo can change dramatically depending on the shutter speed you use.
