I'm not precisely sure what sort of bird this is, but it's definitely one of the smaller raptors or "birds of prey".

I wanted to try a black and white shot, emphasizing the patterns of the plumage, but also to subtly imply the drama of the hunt, and maybe the darker side of being hunted.... So I chose to freeze motion, and underexpose the shot by cranking the shutter speed. My aged camera has some noise issues, so I cleaned it up a little, particularly on the background... but left a little grain-grunge here and there for effect.
