Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in a small, local studio. The studio provided a number of options for shooting and lighting. This particular image was taken using two studio lights (see below) and shot using black seamless paper.

Time

This image taken around 10pm, but the time isn’t too significant as lighting was controlled within the studio.

Lighting

Lighting for this image was provided by two studio strobe lights. The light was a large Octabox slightly above the model and to the left of the model as you look at the image. The second light was another studio strobe with a strip-soft box positioned behind the model (to the right as you look at the image) and aiming slightly toward the camera. This second light served as a fit light to provide definition to the model’s form.

Equipment

Equipment used for this image included: Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera body, Canon EF 24-105 F/4 zoomlens, two Paul C Buff Alien Bees lights, a large Octabox and a medium strip box - - and of course the black seamless paper, light stands, etc. The camera was hand held so no camera support was used. Specific settings for this image were: Aperture set to f/6.3, shutter speed 1/100 sec, ISO 200, with a focal length of 60mm. The two strobe lights were set individually to provide the look wanted and the camera was set to manual exposure mode. Additionally, a Sekonic light meter was used to set the lights to the desired brightness.

Inspiration

For this image, we were going for an implied nude look within the fine art genre. The white sheet provided the “cover” for the model and also provided interesting diagonal lines for the image.

Editing

I shoot in RAW format.. Post processing was accomplished in Lightroom and Photoshop. Lightroom was used to provide a slight crop, convert to B&W, and make minor adjustments to contrast/toning. Photoshop was used to remove some distractions on the seamless paper, etc.

In my camera bag

This image was taken with my Canon 5D Mark III. As for lenses that are always in my bag, they include the trusty Canon 24-105 zoom, a 100mm marco lens (that I use for macro as well as portrait images), and usually an 85mm f/1.2. Other equipment that I tend to have in the bag for indoor/studio shoots include a Sekonic light meter with flash measuring capability. And of course lighting, light modifiers, triggers, etc. if needed (when shooting in a studio that isn't yours, lights, modifiers, and triggers are often available as part of the studio equipment).

Feedback

For images like this one, where multiple strobes/flashes are used, I always start by making sure that no ambient light (or very minimal ambient light) will be registered in the frame when the strobes do not fire. They, I adjust the strobes individually - i.e., Key light is adjusted while the rim light is off. The rim light is adjusted while the key light is off, etc. This way, you can be sure of what you’ll see in the final images.
