Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the South Street Seaport in New York City in the summer of 2013.

Time

It was during a walk along the seaport on July 23, 2013 at noon.

Lighting

A storm was brewing. The sky was turning ominously dark and storm clouds were racing above the East river and over the skyline of Brooklyn.

Equipment

Leica M2 with a 35mm Leitz Summaron lens.

Inspiration

It was the stark contrast of the tall ship in the foreground with the ship's bare rigging against the moving clouds that made me take this shot.

Editing

Very little processing in Lightroom. Just converting from color to B&W and adding a little more contrast.

In my camera bag

Most often I use my old Leica M2 with a 35mm Leitz Summaron lens. I prefer B&W over color. I scan the film and edit digitally in Lightroom. When I am in a hurry or lazy, I use a Sony NX5, or when I am without a camera I use my iphone.

Feedback

For capturing dramatic cloud sky scenes one has to be very alert because the light and the appearance of the cloud configuration changes very quickly. Especially when using film and exposing manually you need to constantly adjust the camera settings for aperture and exposure time.
