I captured this photo during a small baking competition that I had with some friends. It was a great chance for all of us to work together and have a good time, and the cupcakes were beautiful!Time
This photo was taken after we finished baking and frosting the cupcakes, at about 8:30 PM. We were in an indoor kitchen, so the late timing did not have much affect on the lighting.Lighting
All of the lights in the kitchen were overhead, so it took a bit of positioning strategy to be able to shoot from overhead without casting a shadow on the table. I ended up placing the cupcakes between two ceiling lights, so that each hit from a slight angle. I was happy with the fact that the lights were overhead, so that the shadow from the cupcake was not too large.Equipment
The only equipment that I used for this photo was the Nikon D7100 camera with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens.Inspiration
I hadn't planned to take any photos that evening, but after I saw how beautiful the cupcakes were, I couldn't resist. I love to photograph food, and I wanted to commemorate the beautiful end result of our fun little competition. It was definitely a spur-of-the-moment inspiration.Editing
Most of the time I do process my photos in Lightroom Classic. I imported this photo as a RAW image, and then made a few minor adjustments to increase exposure, contrast, and vibrance. I also rotated it a little bit to make the lines more horizontal, then exported it as a JPG file.In my camera bag
My go-to photography items are the Nikon D7100 camera and the Sigma 30 mm f/1.4 lens that I captured this picture with. I take them with me everywhere I go, because opportunity arises in the most unexpected of places! I also sometimes carry an attachable flash, as well as my battery charger and an extra SD card. Occasionally, if I need a smaller and more lightweight camera option, I pack my Nikon D3100 with a Nikon DX 35mm f/1.8 lens.Feedback
Contrast is so important in food photography! I always try to make sure that I don't over-expose when I shoot food, and I also try to ensure that my background is a good bit lighter or darker than the subject. Framing the subject with various complementary items can also be a great way to make it stand out, so be creative!
