Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my way to Mexico City I believe we were just over San Diego or Baja California at this moment.

Time

I took the last flight at midnight so must have been around 1-2am, i would go on to spend 36hours awake that trip. I’d definitely do it again.

Lighting

I was skeptical about how the lighting would come out being so far away and shooting with an older iphone through stretched acrylic but the cabin was dark enough and the city lights bright enough making it a good combination as far as lighting went.

Equipment

I shot this handheld with an iPhone6S back camera. 1/15 at f2 1250iso

Inspiration

I had been looking for night time opportunities for a while but i work mostly in the evening so this was one of the few times i was out after sundown and saw how interesting the city looked from 30,000ish feet above.

Editing

I definitely brought out the highlights a bit. Didn't do much color grading if any, might have brought the whites up a bit and toned the blacks down slightly. Done in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I normally shoot with a 16-35mm f4 on a Canon EOS 5D Mark ii and sometimes an 85mm f1.8.

Feedback

Dont be afraid to shoot with a smart phone If thats all you have. They keep getting better at low light. Also when shooting from inside an airplane I think a phone is more comfortable to work with anyway.
