Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at one of my favourite places to go 'chill' after work rather than just go straight home - a little out of town in a small layby formed by a field entrance. I can watch the traffic, watch the trains go by and, as can be seen by the photo, catch a beautiful sunset.

Time

It was the end of a hot summer day, so around 8.15pm, and it was pretty still. Those clouds weren't going anywhere fast.

Lighting

I wanted the full glory of the sky with the corn only as silhouettes so I exposed for that lovely golden glow.

Equipment

It was shot on a Canon 7D with a 70-200L lens at f10. No other equipment was used (but I think I was leaning on the car for added stability)

Inspiration

I could have just taken the standard sunset shot, but realised the corn tops made a nice spikey foreground if I was a bit lower. I didn't want to use flash to expose the corn as this shot was all about the sky, so I kept the plants as just shapes.

Editing

Some slight PS work was needed to ensure the silhouettes were sharp against the sky (but not all of them, it's not a cut-out)

In my camera bag

I have 2 canons with crop sensors (7D & 50D) and 2 full frame (6D & 5D). Whichever I take would depend on where I was going as all 4 don't go out at once! If I thought I'd need more reach from my lenses I'd go for cropped but if I was looking to get the most out of shadows I'd probably take a full frame. These days I mostly use either the 7D or the 6D, keeping the other 2 as backups. Shooting for myself I'd just take one body + either the 70-200L or 24-105L for preference, or one of Canon's non-L series if I want something lighter.

Feedback

Sometimes it's nice to get a different angle on something. In this case lowering the camera was all that was needed
