Behind The Lens

Location

I had been searching for waxwings for a lomg time. One.morning I saw on a bird watching group that there was a large flock of them in a tree in NH, about 15 mins from where I live. So I got.my kids in the car and drove right over to that parking lot where the tree was.

Time

It was early afternoon, and it was a cool, crisp fall day.

Lighting

The sky was a bit overcast, but even still, their colorings were vibrant and gorgeous

Equipment

Handheld Nikon D850 with a 60-600 sigma sports lens.

Inspiration

When I first saw a photo of a waxwing, it looked like it was a painting. Their feathers are so smoothe and unique. They are stunningly beautiful. I took hundreds of photos that day, as the birds cleared an entire tree of it's red berries. They would throw the berries in the air and catch them in their mouths, and many of them fed each other. This was a life bird for me, and I was not only blessed with the cedar waxwings, but there were also a few bohemian waxwings in the flock.

Editing

The photo was only cropped.

In my camera bag

Nikon D850, Nikon 70-200 2.8, Nikon 105 Macro, and Sigma 60-600.

Feedback

Do.t sit there trying to get a specific shot. You will miss out on so many other great behaviors and compositions if you are only watching for one thing. Also, give yourself a good amount of time to just sit there and observe the birds, adn .continuously take photos from a different angles. Also, always make sure your shutter speed is on the highway side, and these birds do anot.stop moving very often, and they are very social.
