Behind The Lens

Location

I was hiking a local greenway trail in Springfield, MO. I'd just come around a bend and under an overpass with this scene unfurled in front of me. What's a guy to do but sit in the gravel and get some pics.

Time

I grabbed these subtle tones the afternoon of November 13, 2021.

Lighting

It was that easy light from a late autumn afternoon with high, scattered clouds that is probably second only to the golden hour for enriching landscapes.

Equipment

Sony a6300 + E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6. Sony HDR mode.

Inspiration

I love hiking different local trails and seeing new sights. As a transplant to the Ozarks, I try not to take the area for granted so I try and cover new turf regularly. There is beauty and cool things waiting for my camera.

Editing

Post processed in Polorr Pro. Polarr, IMHO, gave me a really good handle on manual editing of most every variable, even if it isn't a powerhouse for color grading. This picture was mostly taken care of by Sony's 3 shot, merged on camera HDR which I have dialed in to my tastes. Polarr just gave me the final nudges.

In my camera bag

For hikes, I mostly carry water and snacks along with a cleaning kit. I select the lens I want on my Sony a6300 beforehand, based on where I'm going and mood. For a greenway trail, a reliable all-in-one is a safe bet. But I'm just as liable to use a prime. I also take along my full spectrum converted Canon ELPH 180 with an IR filter I select before setting off.

Feedback

Get out often, go new places. Shake things up and keep it interesting. I've never thought of myself as being in a pigeonhole. I'm not a landscape artist, macro artist, portraitist, etc. I've done those things, sure, but I just think about being a photographer. I'll snap just about anything. Practice makes perfect (not that I am) and there are opportunities everywhere to capture life, beauty, art, fun and whatever moves you.
