Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the woods near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I live. I am a self-taught photographer. Photography is my hobby. Since I retired, I almost never leave my camera and take pictures of everything that I like, that interests me. And I am always sincerely glad when I manage to take a photo in such a way that other people understand and are interested in what is depicted there. Unfortunately, this happens, alas, not often.

Time

It was at the end of winter. I was walking along a snowy path in the forest. I didn't have a tripod so I had to photograph handheld. It wasn't easy, as the shutter speed was relatively slow, 1/100. This was taken on February 27, 2022 at 13:00.

Lighting

The northern cardinal was in shadow. Nevertheless, since it was a sunny winter day, I was able to use a narrow aperture of 13.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony Sony a7 III Camera (ILCE7M), with a Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 lens. No tripod, no other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

The week before, I had hung a bird feeder in the woods, and every day I added more bird food to it. On the day this photo was taken, when I got to the feeder, there were a few northern cardinals around it. Against the background of white snow, they looked just amazing. I am happy that I was able to photograph one of these beautiful birds with such unusually bright color for a temperate climate.

Editing

Using Adobe LR I had to correct the white balance a little since it was auto option in the camera. In addition, I sharpened the subject a little bit. That’s all.

In my camera bag

Usually I take two cameras with me: Sony a7 III and i-Phone 13 PRO. As for lenses for Sony it can be FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 or FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3. Also tripod GEEKOTO 79 inches.

Feedback

It is believed that the birds of our back yard can be easily seen and photographed. But this is a delusion. A lot of it is a matter of luck, and some may never get lucky. So if you want to increase your chances, set up bird feeders.
