Agathla Peak (AZ) or Shiprock (NM); Shiprock or Agathla Peak. How does one choose a favorite? Both offer dramatic compositions hour-by-hour, day-by-day, season-by-season. Agathla Peak and its New Mexico neighbor, Shiprock, sit within the Navajo Volcanic Field in the southern Colorado Plateau. Agathla Peak rises nearly 1,500 feet above its surroundings in northeastern Arizona; Shiprock projects almost 1,600 feet above its northwest New Mexico landscape. Agathla Peak (also known as Agathlan and El Capitan) sits between Kayenta, AZ, and Monument Valley. It is arguably the lesser know of the two monoliths but no less magnificent. The eroded volcanic plugs of Agathlan and Shiprock create a captivating scenes. Both are well worth the time and effort to view and, if conditions allow, capture a few dramatic images.
