Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Latrabjarg bird cliffs in the Westfjords of Iceland. After a long, sometimes overwhelming drive in the steep landscape, we saw this beauty standing outside its nest at the edge of the cliffs.

Time

After waking up early the same morning and driving through the Westfjords of Iceland we approached the bird cliffs in the middle of an overcast day. The puffin colony were active, tending to their nests and fishing.

Lighting

On this day there was good natural light, a little bit overcast but still good for the portraits. Since I mostly shot with the ocean as background there was a good mix between light and dark between elements in the background.

Equipment

For this portrait I used my Canon EOS 110D with an Canon zoom lens EF-S 55-250 mm, 1:4-5.6 IS STM.

Inspiration

Since I always had a passion for conservation, travel and wildlife it was a goal of mine to photograph the endangered Atlantic puffin, especially in this beautiful location in Iceland. This charismatic puffin was a great subject for the portrait.

Editing

Yes, but not that much. What I did was a little processing in Photoshop, enhancing the light and colors just a bit.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon camera, and a couple of lenses I switch between depending on the motif. Sometimes I also bring my tripod as compliment.

Feedback

Since puffins live in colonies, often on steep cliffs, it’s important to be careful. It’s also important to have in mind that the weather and light can change quickly in the fjords of Iceland. And of course it is also important to show respect for the birds and their nesting area while photographing. Also, remember, the key to photographing birds is to be patient and wait for the right time, as well as being quick when the oppurtunity comes.
