I took this photo in my photography class back in high school - these steps are the way to the theatre of our school! I walked by them everyday. I stumbled upon this photo of mine and reimagined it in black and white and added some texture and contrast.Time
This was taken during a schoolday in the early afternoon of my Grade 12 Year. We had free reign and creativity to go out and take photos of whatever we wanted that day and I made the choice to take some abstract photos!Lighting
The lobby of my high school is opened up by two massive glass walls that give a beautiful light on anything and anyone passing by. The stairs in this photo is one of the subjects of this light! I made sure to capture the stairs in a way that gave some depth and mystery to them.Equipment
I used a camera that my school provided. I had it on basic settings and leaned over the side of the top stair to capture this without a tripod.Inspiration
This staircase is a beautiful half circle that connects the lobby and surrounding hallways to a landing that then leads into the theatre. These stairs are used daily by guests, students and staff of my high school. Graduate students take their group prom picture on these stairs, students use these stairs as a place to sit and eat lunch, and staff use it to grab students' attention when needed (these are only some of the uses). I wanted to capture these stairs in a different light - by giving it some contrast and texture these stairs could be highlighted and acknowledged - instead of just being a part of everyday life and disregarded.Editing
Yes - I originally had this picture in colour and left it fairly raw when I first captured it in high school (2019). I just recently came across it again and popped it into Adobe Lightroom to give it some extra attention and care. I took time to figure out where I wanted to highlight its textures and where I wanted to deepen the shadows - after working on it periodically for a few days, I came out with this!In my camera bag
I always have a lens hood, a few different lens filters, and my Nikon D3200. I recently bought a new Tamron (18-400mm) lens that is now always with me - and I always have a few SD cards handy as I tend to take a lot of photos when I'm out and about!Feedback
I suggest to take a moment and truly look around you for the typically insignificant things. When I go out for walks with my camera I make a conscious effort to slow down, and let my eyes gaze across everything in my path - most of the time this is when I take some of my best shots! Don't be afraid to try out new things. And lastly, the photo does not have to be exactly what you imagined to be a great shot, that is what editing is for ;) take more than one shot of your subject, try different angels and move the image around when editing it to capture something exciting!
