Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is from my front yard. Actually most of my outdoor shoots take place within walking distance of my front door.

Time

It’s from a series of daylily pictures that I took about an hour after dawn.

Lighting

The flowers are a pale yellow and face east, so the sun was really all the light I needed. The black plastic that I keep in my camera bag bounces light just a tiny bit, and I was using it to isolate the blossom, so I had a double win with that.

Equipment

I use an old iPhone SE with a single lens. The day I shot this series was totally spontaneous. I remember going out with just a black plastic sheet and my camera. Great morning!!

Inspiration

The title of this picture is “Daylily Beckons” because I could see the flower asking me to lie down and participate in a photo shoot with it.

Editing

I love/hate post-processing. I’m more of a “take 5 different, amazing pictures that require small edits like a better crop” kinda photographer, at least this week.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is tiny. Obviously, I have my phone/camera. I carry a small mirror (to bounce light), the black plastic bottom from a reusable grocery bag (to block foliage as needed), a small spray bottle of water, bug spray, mints, peanut butter crackers, chewing gum, and as much water as possible. Obviously I’m a newer and mobile photographer.

Feedback

Look around you, and get up close and personal with your subject. I shoot a lot of nature, animals, and children, so I’m always on the ground. It’s a great way to get a new perspective and a chance to mix it up with subtle but intuitive lighting. Mostly, have fun!
