Sapsuckers are a type of bird related to Woodpeckers. Each kind makes its own unique style of indentation in the top layer of the tree - just deep enough to harvest the sap. After a hole stops filling up, they make a new one. Many times you'll see Hummingbirds taking advantage of the sugar rich sap if they've arrived in a region a little too early and they don't have enough or any flowers in bloom to drink from yet.
