Pictured here are wooden Ojibwa spirt houses. The purpose of these structures was to protect the body of the departed while his or her soul crossed over to the spirit world. The round hole, cut in the western end of the structure, enabled the deceased's spirit to escape. Often the family of the departed would place food offerings, tools, and other items of significance to the decease within the structure.
