Rain is a blessing from heaven in the Northern Cape, South Africa. This was the case in the Northern Cape during the summer of 2022. (Floods and rainstorms due to climate change, as was the case in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Free State Province, were terrifying.) But the Northern Cape, mostly arid and semi-desert, was like paradise in March-April 2022. Then came the locusts, clouding the skies from the ground upwards. These are emerging clouds: locusts in the wingless phase. They swarm over the roads, through the veld, into shrubs and over gravel. This image is from one such a a swarm near Pofadder in the Norhtern Cape.
